Below is the press release of House Deputy Speaker Erin Tanada calling for hte release of the 43.
Former Human Rights Committee Chairman of the House of Representatives and now Deputy Speaker Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada R. III asked President Benigno Aquino III to withdraw the cases filed against 43 health workers eight months ago. The group, now commonly known as “Morong 43”, were having a health training when they were arrested and detained using a defective search warrant. The group during inquest and interrogation was denied counsel. As such, statements or confession obtained during an illegal arrest are not admissible.
Tañada asked for the release of all 43 upon recognizance to a person acceptable to the Court but specially pleaded that due consideration be given to the women who are pregnant or who have given birth.
“I think that amnesty is not what they need as they are not guilty of anything. What they need is nothing but just plain and simple respect for their basic human rights ,” Tañada emphasized.
