Renato Reyes, Jr. BAYAN secretary general and impeachment complainant
The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan welcomes the decision of the High Court dismissing the petition of Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez and allowing the impeachment proceedings against her to proceed.
The decision is most welcome especially now that there are allegations of gross corruption and with the Ombdusman not fulfilling its mandate of going after corrupt officials. As we have seen in the plea bargain agreement with Gen. Carlos Garcia, the Ombudsman has not upheld the interests of the government and the people, especially in high profile corruption cases. The people desire truth and justice but the Ombudsman has failed to deliver.
As impeachment complainants, we look forward to the resumption of the hearings at the House of Representatives. We will be preparing for the presentation of evidence as the Justice Committee begins the phase of determining probable cause for the impeachment complaint. We hope that this process reaches its logical conclusion and that the impeachment complaint will reach the Senate for trial.
The impeachment complaint, if successful, would be a historic first for the Ombudsman. It would surely test the accountability of government institutions under the Aquino government. This is a political process and would require the full support of the allies of Aquino at the Lower House. ###
